Global Warming and Rice
Against the backdrop of concerns that climate change due to Green House Gas effect could hit rice production in India, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) today said it was collaborating with Indian scientists to address the problem by trying to create a hybrid variety that can withstand global warming. This was conveyed by IRRI director general Mr Robert Zeigler to President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam who visited a field in the IRRI complex. [ more ]
The effect of global warming is not the problem, global warming is the problem. We will be producing hybrid rice but are we going to tackle all the resulting problems individually. India is doing its part, with carbon credits being a great incentive. But with our economy only going one direction, we must take care that the environment is NOT further ravaged.
I think the pollution should be a matter of Global concern, so that this thing don't happen again and again. A serious Global task force, not heavily dependent on the USA.

um..excuse-moi.."But with our economy only going one direction, we must take care that the environment is further ravaged", was that subtle sarcasm or was it a typo?
The IRRI project means more trouble, cos it means genetic re-engineering..the rice grain will be preserved longer, but lose out on nutrients. A very little known fact is that since the Green Revolution, crops have steadily lost out on counts of both taste and minerals.
I agree, how can any global task force check pollution if the US heads it-America is the biggest polluting country in the world, 80% of the world's resources are consumed by Americans. They don't wanna go back to the bad ol' days of walking 10 meters to the nearest fully air-conditioned shopping plaza/mall/restaurant.
IT WAS A BLUNDERING TYPO. Correcting it ...
I said, "not dependent on US" like all other global task forces are..
Not that I hate US so much... But they are the.....well
It sure needs to be taken very seriously, by a completely neutral Force. It's good that many companies have profited from the Kyoto protocol( me included- I bought a good chunk of a chemical company), but it also means the the so called eveloped countries are vomiting gases.
And thx for pointing it out the typo.
Many Indian companies I meant, again...
"It's good that many companies have profited from the Kyoto protocol( me included- I bought a good chunk of a chemical company), but it also means the the so called eveloped countries are vomiting gases."
Oh you capitalists! Ye the suckers of men's blood who do reverence to your green and golden gods on mounds of chemical bottles and third world dumping grounds - :)(Disclaimer policy: the tirade is not to be taken seriously. The author is not reponsible for any sentiments of hurt and guilt arising out of such honest words)
Sentiments intact.. ;-)
It was the only good thing that did good for non-polluting companies( not non polluting at all but, lil better)
